Die Wolseley Motor Company war ein britischer Automobilhersteller.

Geschichte

1895 begann Herbert Austin bei der von der Wolseley Sheep Shearing Company neu gegründeten Tochterfirma in Birmingham mit der Entwicklung von Dreiradfahrzeugen. 1896 wurde das erste Wolseley-Automobil vorgestellt. Austin verließ die Gesellschaft 1905 und gründete seine eigene Firma. Zwischen 1905 und 1910 führte der Konstrukteur John Davenport Siddeley das Unternehmen, die Fahrzeuge wurden als Wolseley-Siddeley vermarktet. In dieser Zeit entwickelte das Unternehmen den ersten Motorschlitten, der bei der Terra-Nova-Expedition (1910–1913) unter der Leitung des britischen Polarforschers Robert Falcon Scott eingesetzt wurde. In Erinnerung daran trägt das Felsmassiv Wolseley Buttress auf der Antarktischen Halbinsel den Namen des Herstellers. Während des Ersten Weltkriegs produzierte Wolseley Hispano-Suiza-V8-Flugmotoren in Lizenz.

1927 ging Wolseley in Konkurs und wurde von Morris übernommen. Seither wurden baugleiche Teile in Modellen der Marken Morris, MG und Wolseley verwendet. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg glichen sich die Wolseley-Modelle immer mehr den Morris-Modellen an. 1949 wurden die Produktionsanlagen in das Morris-Werk nach Cowley verlegt. Fortan waren Automobile, die unter dem Markennamen Wolseley angeboten wurden, nur noch luxuriöser ausgestattete Varianten von Morris-Modellen (sog. Badge Engineering). 1975 stellte der neue Mutterkonzern, British Leyland, die Produktion von Automobilen mit dem Markennamen Wolseley ein; der letzte Wolseley war eine hochwertige Version des BLMC ADO71.

1896 wurde ein Tricycle mit zwei Plätzen in Rücken-an-Rücken-Bauform (dos-à-dos) vorgestellt. Das gelenkte Vorderrad war mit einer Gabel wie bei einem Fahrrad aufgehängt. Der Zweizylindermotor aus Stahlguss auf einem Aluminiumrahmen trieb die Hinterräder an.<ref>{{#invoke:Vorlage:Literatur|f}}</ref>
