Diese Liste von Komponistinnen enthält bekannte Komponistinnen aus allen Epochen der Musikgeschichte, allerdings finden sie sich in zahlenmäßig weitaus geringerem Umfang als männliche Komponisten. Grundsätzlich begründet sich dieser Unterschied im soziokulturellen Umfeld, das eine berufliche musikalische Ausbildung für Frauen bis in die neuere Zeit nur selten zuließ, auch nicht im Fach „Komposition“. Die systematische Erforschung von Biografien und Werken komponierender Frauen begann im ausgehenden 20. Jahrhundert.<ref>Zur weiterführenden Literatur siehe Abschnitt "Literatur (Auswahl)".</ref>
