Robert Norman (* vor 1560; † nach 1596) war ein englischer Seemann und Instrumentenbauer. Er befasste sich unter anderem mit dem Magnetismus.

Leben und Wirken

Über ihn ist wenig bekannt. Norman fuhr längere Zeit als Navigator zur See. Er ließ sich schließlich in Radcliffe bei London nieder und stellte Instrumente her, darunter Kompasse.

Wie schon Georg Hartmann (1544) befasste er sich damit, dass die Kompassnadel nicht horizontal lag.

1581 erschien Normans Schrift The newe attractive, die er William Borough widmete. Darin beschrieb er das erste Inklinatorium. The newe attractive wurde gemeinsam mit Boroughs Schrift A discours of the variation of the cumpas, or magneticall needle veröffentlicht.

Seine 1584 erschienene Schrift The safegarde of saylers, or great rutter war eine Übersetzung aus dem Niederländischen, die im Wesentlichen auf dem Buch Leeskaart dit is die Caert vander see om oost ende weste te seylen (Amsterdam 1566) beruhte.

Ehrungen

Auf dem Mond wurde der Krater Norman nach ihm benannt. Zudem ist er Namensgeber für den Norman Peak in der Antarktis.
