Modest Iwanowitsch, ein Neffe des Dichters Ippolit Fjodorowitsch Bogdanowitsch, war seit 1823 Offizier. In dieser Eigenschaft nahm er am Feldzug gegen Polen teil.

1839 wurde Bogdanowitsch Professor für Kriegsgeschichte und Strategie an der Petersburger Militärakademie.
