Kreios

Kreios oder Krios (Vorlage:GrcS oder Vorlage:GrcS) ist einer der Titanen der griechischen Mythologie, Sohn der Gaia und des Uranos.

Er ist der Gatte der Eurybia und somit neben Iapetos der einzige Titan der ersten Generation, der sich nicht die eigene Schwester zur Frau nimmt. Mit ihr ist er Vater des Astraios, des Pallas und des Perses.<ref>Hesiod, Theogonie 134; 375</ref><ref>Bibliotheke des Apollodor 1,2,8</ref>

Die frühere Forschung nahm an, dass es sich bei Kreios um eine Gottheit handelte, die von der Bevölkerung des Peloponnes verehrt worden sei, bis er im Zuge der dorischen Wanderung von den griechischen Göttern verdrängt worden sei. Die wohl ursprüngliche Form {{#invoke:Vorlage:lang|flat}} legt nahe, dass es sich um eine theriomorph als Widder gedachte Gottheit gehandelt hat, die mit Karneios zu identifizieren ist. Während er einerseits bei Hesiod in die Genealogie der griechischen Götter unter die Titanen eingereiht wurde, wurde er als Karneios mit Apollon identifiziert und weiterhin verehrt.<ref>Karl Scherling: Kr(e)ios. Mythos

Als seine Mutter Gaia ihren Söhnen den Auftrag gab, Uranos zu entmannen, hielt er mit seinen Brüdern Hyperion, Koios und Iapetos den gemeinsamen Vater fest. Kronos entmannte ihn dann mit einer Sichel.<ref>Bibliotheke des Apollodor 1,1,4</ref> Interpretationsansätze assoziieren seine Familienverhältnisses und Namensgebung (altgriechisch für Widder) mit den Titeln Titan des Südens bzw. Titan des südlichen Himmels sowie Titan der Sternbilder.
