Lage
Der Steinkreis steht acht Kilometer nördlich von Millom Without 204 m hoch<ref>Aubrey Burl, Great Stone Circles, fables, fiction facts. New Haven, Yale University Press 1999, S. 173. ISBN 0-300-07689-4</ref> auf einer sumpfigen Wiese, die von Bergen umgeben ist, darunter Raven Crag und Dunnerdale Fells. Unweit der Anlage fließt der Black Beck, der in den Duddon Sands ins Meer mündet.<ref name="auto1"/>
Forschungsgeschichte
Das entlegene Denkmal war frühen Antiquaren wie Stukeley oder Aubrey unbekannt<ref>Aubrey Burl: Great Stone Circles, fables, fiction facts. New Haven, Yale University Press 1999, S. 173. ISBN 0-300-07689-4</ref>. Richard Gough (1735–1809) erwähnt den Namen „Sunken Church“<ref>Britannia, or, A chorographical description of the flourishing kingdoms of England, Scotland, and Ireland, and the islands adjacent; from the earliest antiquity / by William Camden, translated from the edition published by the author in MDCVII, enlarged by the latest discoveries, by Richard Gough. London, Nichols & Son 1789, 432, zitiert nach A. L. Lewis, On three Stone Circles in Cumberland, with some further Observations on the Relation of Stone Circles to adjacent Hills and outlying Stones. Journal of the Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland 15, 1886, 475</ref>. Der Kreis wurde erst 1872 von Charles William Dymond (1832–1915) und William Gershom Collingwood (1854–1932) vermessen bzw. ausgegraben<ref name="auto2">Aubrey Burl: Great Stone Circles, fables, fiction facts. New Haven, Yale University Press 1999, S. 175. ISBN 0-300-07689-4</ref>, der die Ergebnisse im selben Jahr im Journal of the British Archaeological Association publizierte<ref name="auto"/>. 1901 legten Dymond und Collingwood zwei Schnitte an<ref name="auto2"/>. Unter dem Gras und einer flachen Erdschicht fanden sie eine Schicht Mergel, die zwischen 15 und 75 cm dick war. Alle erfassten Steine standen in flachen Gruben in dieser Mergelschicht und waren mit kleineren Felsen verkeilt. Es fanden sich Holzkohle, Knochensplitter und im Gras, moderne Münzen<ref name="auto2"/>. Beschreibung
Der Steinkreis hat einen Durchmesser von 29,0 m<ref name="auto1"/> und besteht aus 54 Steinen, von denen 28 aufrecht stehen. Burl nimmt an, dass er ursprünglich 64 Steine enthielt<ref name="auto2"/>. Der Abstand der Steine beträgt im Durchschnitt 1,5 m<ref name="auto2"/>. Der größte Stein misst 2,3 m und steht im Norden. Im Südosten befindet sich der Eingang zwischen zwei Portalsteinen.<ref name="auto2"/> Die Steine standen ursprünglich vermutlich auf der Innenseite eines Walls, sie sind nach innen verstürzt<ref name="auto2"/>.
Sein hybrides Konzept hat im Steinkreis von Ballynoe in Nordirland das einzige Pendant. Ballynoe und Swinside liegen bei 54°17' Nord, beiderseits der Irischen See.<ref>They enclose a space about 35 metres across - thought to have been built as a counterpart to the beautiful and contemporaneous circle at Swinside in Cumbria some 190 km due E.
