}} Rendova ist eine Insel des New-Georgia-Archipels in der Western-Provinz der Salomonen. Sie liegt im Pazifik und hat eine Fläche von 411 km² und der höchste Punkt hat eine Höhe von 1060 m über dem Meer.<ref>UNEP Islands (englisch)</ref>
Die größten Siedlungen, Ughele und Bango Pingo, liegen an der Ostküste, am Blanche Channel, der die Insel von New Georgia trennt, der Hauptinsel des Archipels.
Geografie
Rendova ist eine annähernd rechteckige Insel. Sie ist etwa 40 Kilometer lang. Im Norden liegt die Insel New Georgia, im Osten die Insel Vangunu. Rendova ist eine Vulkaninsel mit einem zentralen Stratovulkankegel von 1.050 Metern Höhe – Rendova Peak genannt, der zuletzt im Pleistozän ausbrach. Die Insel ist jedoch häufig von Erdbeben betroffen. Teilweise ist sie von einem Korallenriff umgeben. Das Klima auf Rendova ist feucht-tropisch, und die Insel wird häufig von Zyklonen heimgesucht.
Flora und Fauna

Bevölkerung
1999 wurde die Einwohnerzahl von Rendova auf 3.679 geschätzt. Auf der Insel Rendova werden zwei indigene Sprachen gesprochen: die austronesische Sprache Ughele im Norden und die papuanische Sprache Touo im Süden.
Geschichte
Am 15. März 1893 wurde Rendova zum Teil des britischen Protektorats der Salomonen erklärt. Zu Beginn des Zweiten Weltkriegs wurde die Insel vom Japanischen Kaiserreich besetzt. Am 30. Juni 1943 landeten die Alliierten auf Rendova und besiegten die 300 Mann starke japanische Garnison schnell. Dies war Teil einer Strategie zur Rückeroberung von Munda und dessen Flugfeld auf der Insel New Georgia. Die Insel diente später der US-Marine als Basis für ihre PT-Schnellboot-Operationen.
Die Salomonen-Bewohner Biuku Gasa und Eroni Kumana paddelten mit ihrem Einbaum 60 km (35 Meilen) zur Basis, um eine auf eine Kokosnuss eingravierte Nachricht des damaligen Leutnants zur See John F. Kennedy zu überbringen. Kennedys PT-Boot, PT 109, war vom japanischen Zerstörer Amagiri versenkt worden, und er und seine Besatzung waren auf einer der umliegenden Inseln gestrandet.<ref>American Warriors: Five Presidents in the Pacific Theater of World War II. Seit 1978 gehört die Insel zum unabhängigen Staat der Salomonen.
In der Populärkultur
Rendova ist Schauplatz des humorvollen Romans „Solomon Time“ von Will Randall aus dem Jahr 2002. Die Geschichte handelt von einem britischen Lehrer, der in ein Dorf auf Rendova zieht, um dort ein Gemeindeprojekt zu organisieren.
