Die Parlamentswahlen in Gambia 1972 fanden im westafrikanischen Staat Gambia am 28. und 29. März 1972 statt.<ref>ipu.org (PDF)</ref> Diese Wahlen (auch: Allgemeine Wahlen) waren für 32 gewählte Sitze im Repräsentantenhaus ().

Die People’s Progressive Party (PPP) erhielt 28 Sitzen und konnte damit die deutliche Mehrheit gewinnen. Zweitstärkste Kraft wurde die United Party (UP) mit drei Sitzen.<ref name="A political history of The Gambia">Arnold Hughes, David Perfect: A political history of The Gambia, 1816–1994. Wahlverfahren und -kreise

Es wurde zum vierten Mal das Repräsentantenhaus () gewählt. Das Repräsentantenhaus hatte insgesamt 40 Mitglieder, von denen 32 in einer Direktwahl gewählt wurden. Acht weitere Mitglieder wurden von den Häuptlingen ernannt.

Die Anzahl und Einteilung der Wahlkreise wurde gegenüber der Wahl 1966 nicht verändert.

Wahlvorbereitung

Die Gambia Congress Party (GCP) unter der Führung Ibrahima Momodou Garba-Jahumpa wurde 1968 aufgelöst, Garba-Jahumpa wechselte zur PPP.

In den 32 Wahlkreisen traten 63 Kandidaten an und wollten die Mehrheit der Wähler erhalten.<ref name="A political history of The Gambia" /> Darunter trat die PPP mit 32 Kandidaten in jedem Wahlkreis an, herausgefordert wurde sie von 14 Kandidaten der UP. Weiter gab es bei dieser Wahl 19 Kandidaten, die keiner Partei angehörten.

Insgesamt 40 Sitze Sonst.: 8 PPP: 28 UP: 3 Unabh.: 1 Mit ‚Sonst. Sitze‘ sind die Sitze gemeint, die ernannt wurden.

Es wurden 103.851 gültige Stimmen abgegebenen.

Bei der Wahl gewannen die PPP 28 und die UP drei Sitze, ein parteiloser konnte einen Sitz gewinnen.

Bathurst North 1972

Nachdem der gewählte Vertreter des Wahlkreises Bathurst Nord, Pierre Sarr N’Jie (UP), den Sitz im Parlament wegen Nichterscheinen verloren hatte, wurden im Dezember 1972 im Wahlkreis Nachwahlen angesetzt. Musa A. Jobe (UP) konnte den Wahlkreis für sich gewinnen.<ref name="A political history of The Gambia" />
