Lastovo ({{#invoke:Vorlage:lang|full|CODE=it|SCRIPTING=Latn|SERVICE=italienisch}}, deutsch veraltet Augusta) ist eine Insel südlich von Korčula in der kroatischen Adria. Die Insel liegt in der Gespanschaft Dubrovnik-Neretva. Lastovo ist neun Kilometer lang, sechs Kilometer breit. Die höchste Erhebung der insgesamt hügeligen Insel ist der 417 Meter hohe Berg Hum. An den Hängen der Insel werden Wein, Oliven und Obst angebaut. Die Hauptorte der kaum 800 Einwohner zählenden Insel sind der Fähr- und Naturhafen Ubli, die Inselhauptstadt Lastovo, Skrivena Luka (Portorus), Pasadur und Zaklopatica. Bewohnt ist die Insel seit dem späten Neolithikum.

2006 wurde die Insel, wie auch der umliegende Archipel, zum Naturpark Lastovo erklärt.

Geologie

Lastovo liegt in der Nähe eines seismisch aktiven Gebiets. Gemeinsam mit 45 weiteren kleineren Inseln bildet sie den Lastovo-Archipel, wo sich auf der Karbonatplattform der Adria Kalkstein aus dem Oberjura bis zur mittleren Kreidezeit abgelagert hat. Die Karstlandschaft entstand dabei erst nach der alpinen Gebirgsbildung. Spätjurassische Gesteine sind die ältesten, die auf der Insel zutage treten. Eine entlang der Nordküste der Insel verlaufende Verwerfung trennt die jüngeren Karbonatgesteine von der älteren Abfolge. Die Landschaft ist von Karstsenken und -formationen wie Poljen und Karen geprägt.<ref>Georgios Lazaridis, Konstantinos P. Geschichte

Archäologisch lässt sich die Besiedlung der Insel seit dem späten Neolithikum nachweisen, also nach der Zeit der Jäger und Sammler. Als bedeutendste archäologische Fundstätte gilt die Rača-Höhle im Südosten Lastovos, in der Antonio Mario Radmilli bereits 1942, noch als Student an der Universität Padua, Grabungen durchführte. Er konnte anhand der Strata eine Chronologie entwickeln.<ref>Antonio Mario Radmilli: L'isola di Lagosta nella preistoria, 1955.</ref> Später stellte sich heraus, dass die Funde der Hvar-Kultur zuzurechnen waren. Grga Novak konnte 1953 eine Schicht freilegen, die vom späten Neolithikum bis in die hellenistische und die römische Zeit reicht.<ref>Grga Novak: Arheološka istraživanja na otocima Lastovu i Korčuli u 1953. godini, Ljetopis Jugoslavenske akademije znanosti i umjetnosti 60 (1955) 227–230.</ref> Seit 2021 finden weitere Grabungen statt, die belegen konnten, dass die Höhle bis ins Frühmittelalter genutzt wurde. Aus der Kupferzeit, hier dem 3. Jahrtausend v. Im Frühmittelalter galt den Venezianern die Insel als Piratenunterschlupf, bis diese unter ihrem Dogen Pietro II. Orseolo die Insel im Jahr 1000 nach einer erbitterten Schlacht eroberten.

1252 wurde Lastovo Teil der Republik Ragusa und erhielt bis ins 17. Jahrhundert innere Autonomie.

Die Republik Ragusa wurde 1808 mitsamt Lastovo Teil der illyrischen Provinzen unter Napoleon. Nach dem Wiener Kongress fiel die Insel 1815 als Teil des Königreichs Dalmatien an Österreich.

Nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg fiel Dalmatien 1919 dem Königreich der Serben, Kroaten und Slowenen zu. Lastovo wurde im Grenzvertrag von Rapallo allerdings 1920 Italien zugesprochen.

Ab dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs gehörte Lastovo zu Jugoslawien. Unter der Regierung Tito war die Insel genau wie Vis für Touristen aus militärischen Gründen gesperrt.

Inseldialekt

Aufgrund der historischen Verbindungen zwischen Lastovo und Dubrovnik und der Nähe der Insel hat der Dialekt von Lastovo zahlreiche Wörter aus demjenigen von Dubrovnik beibehalten. Trotz des Widerstands der Bevölkerung gegen die Italianisierung führte die Herrschaft und die Verwendung der italienischen Sprache in Kirche, Armee und staatlichen Diensten dazu, dass die meisten Fremdwörter im Dialekt aus dem Italienischen stammen. Heute haben die Älteren die besten Kenntnisse der Italianismen, aber auch in der Altersgruppe der 20- bis 59-Jährigen bestehen gute Kenntnisse, insbesondere wenn ihre Eltern in Lastovo oder Dalmatien geboren waren und sie während ihrer Ausbildung Italienisch gelernt hatten. Tourismus

Lastovo ist mittels einer Fährverbindung von Dubrovnik über Šipan, (Mljet) und Korčula mit dem Festland verbunden. Die Linie wird von der G&V Line betrieben.

Für Segler ist Lastovo eine attraktive Zwischenstation auf dem Weg zwischen Split und Dubrovnik. Anker- und Festmachmöglichkeiten bestehen in den Buchten am westlichen Ende der Insel (Veli Lago und Mali Lago) sowie in den Häfen von Ubli, Pasadur und Zaklopatica. Auf der Insel existieren ein Hotel, zwei Campingplätze sowie zahlreiche Apartments. Der freie Blick von den Anhöhen der Insel Richtung Süden und die sehr geringe Lichtverschmutzung tragen dazu bei, dass Lastovo auch für Hobbyastronomen sehr vorteilhafte Bedingungen bietet.<ref>Uwe Reichert: Die Wiederentdeckung der Dunkelheit. In: Sterne und Weltraum 6/2010, S. 102f.</ref> Messungen zeigen, dass der Nachthimmel über Lastovo sehr dunkel und die Sichtbarkeit der Milchstraße von der Insel aus sehr gut ist.

Eine besondere Attraktion ist der Karneval von Lastovo, der seit 1390 nachweislich belegt ist.
