}} in Pawlowsk) war ein Sohn des russischen Zaren Nikolaus I. Pawlowitsch und dessen Gemahlin Alexandra Fjodorowna, Tochter des Königs Friedrich Wilhelm III. von Preußen.

Leben

Konstantins Erziehung unterlag der strengen Aufsicht von Friedrich von Lütke. Ohne Rücksicht seines Ranges als Großfürst, erhielt er eine Marineausbildung wie alle anderen Kadetten und hatte so auch Einblick in das normale russische Alltagsleben. Er sprach neben Russisch auch fließend Englisch, Deutsch und Französisch.

Auf Seiten der Österreicher war er als junger Offizier 1849 bei der Niederschlagung des Aufstandes in Ungarn beteiligt und erhielt dafür das St.-Georgs-Kreuz IV. Klasse. Ein Jahr später wurde er mit in die Regierung einbezogen. 1855 wurde sein Bruder als Alexander II. russischer Zar und Konstantin verantwortlich für alle Marineangelegenheiten. Er hatte ein sehr vertrautes Verhältnis mit dem Bruder und unterstützte ihn in seinem Reformwillen, besonders bei der Garantie der Verfassung von 1881.

1862 wurde er Vizekönig (Namiestnik) von Polen und schon am zweiten Tag nach seiner Ankunft bei einem Attentat verwundet. Trotz seiner Bemühungen um die polnische Bevölkerung revoltierten die Polen gegen die russische Fremdherrschaft und Konstantin verhängte das Kriegsrecht.

Nach seiner Rückkehr nach Russland war er 16 Jahre Präsident der Regierung und trat zurück, als sein Neffe Alexander III., der seinen Onkel als zu liberal einstufte, die Verfassung aufhob. Seine letzten Lebensjahre verbrachte er auf der Krim. 1889 erlitt er einen Schlaganfall und starb rund zwei Jahre später.

Konstantin heiratete 1848 Alexandra von Sachsen-Altenburg, Tochter von Herzog Joseph von Sachsen-Altenburg, mit der er folgende Kinder hatte:

• Olga Konstantinowna (1851–1926), Königin von Griechenland
• Vera Konstantinowna (1854–1912)
• Konstantin Konstantinowitsch (1858–1915)
• Dimitri Konstantinowitsch (1860–1919)
• Wjatscheslaw Konstantinowitsch (1862–1879)

Obwohl Konstantin seine Frau sehr verehrte, fing er zum Anfang der 1870er Jahre ein Verhältnis mit einer Ballerina namens Anna Wassiljewna Kusnezowa an. Auch sie schenkte ihm eine Reihe von Kindern, von denen allerdings nur zwei Mädchen die Kindheit überlebten.
