James Hamilton, 2. Duke of Abercorn (* 24. August 1838 in Brighton; † 3. Januar 1913 in London), war ein irischer Adliger und britischer Politiker.

Leben

James Hamilton war der älteste Sohn von James Hamilton, 2. Marquess of Abercorn und dessen Gemahlin Lady Louisa Jane Russell. Als Heir apparent seines Vaters führte er den Höflichkeitstitel Viscount Hamilton und, nachdem sein Vater 1868 zum Duke of Abercorn erhoben worden war, bis 1885 den Höflichkeitstitel Marquess of Hamilton.

Er besuchte die Harrow School und studierte am Christ Church College der University of Oxford.

Er war von 1860 bis 1880 als Knight of the Shire für das County Donegal Mitglied des House of Commons. Er gehörte der Conservative Party an. 1863 hatte er das Amt des Sheriff des County Tyrone und von 1866 bis 1885 das Hofamt des Lord of the Bedchamber des Edward, Prince of Wales inne. Beim Tod seines Vaters erbte er 1885 dessen Adelstitel als 2. Duke of Abercorn und wurde dadurch Mitglied des House of Lords. 1885 wurde er auch Lord Lieutenant des County Donegal, ein Jahr später Großmeister der Großloge der Freimaurer in Irland. Von 1886 bis 1891 hatte er das Hofamt des Groom of the Stool inne und 1887 wurde er ins Privy Council von Irland aufgenommen. 1901 verkündete er als Sondergesandter offiziell die Thronbesteigung Eduards VII. als außerordentlicher Gesandter an den Höfen in Berlin, Dresden, Kopenhagen, Stockholm und Oslo. James Hamilton war der Ururgroßvater von Diana, Princess of Wales.
