Googie Withers

Georgette Lizette „Googie“ Withers CBE, AO (* 12. März 1917 in Karatschi, Britisch-Indien; † 15. Juli 2011 in Sydney, Australien) war eine britische Schauspielerin. Der Spitzname Googie, Hindi für „Taube“, wurde ihr von ihrem indischen Kindermädchen gegeben. Der Guardian nannte sie „die am stärksten sexualisierte Schauspielerin im britischen Kino der Nachkriegszeit“.<ref>Philip French: It Always Rains on Sunday – review, The Guardian, 28. Leben

Googie Withers – den Spitznamen trug sie seit ihrer Kindheit – wurde als Tochter eines britischen Seemanns und einer Holländerin im britisch-indischen Karatschi geboren. Als Siebenjährige siedelte sie mit ihren Eltern nach Großbritannien um.<ref> Talking Heads - Googie Withers & John McCallum, Australian Broadcasting Corporation, 8. Oktober 2007 (via archive.org)</ref> Ihre erste Filmrolle hatte sie als Tänzerin in dem Film The Girl in the Crowd von Michael Powell.

Googie Withers heiratete 1948 den australischen Schauspieler, Regisseur und Produzenten John McCallum (1918–2010), der sich weiland hauptsächlich in England aufhielt. Aus der Ehe gingen drei Kinder – die Töchter Joanna und Amanda sowie der Sohn Nicholas – hervor. Nachdem McCallum, später einer der Kreatoren des australischen Welterfolgs Skippy, das Buschkänguruh, mit der Leitung der australischen Produktionsgesellschaft J. C. Williamson's betraut wurde, ließ sich das Paar 1958 in der Metropole Sydney nieder. Withers kehrte des Öfteren nach England zurück um an dortigen Produktionen wie die Fernsehreihe Within These Walls (1974–78), wo sie die Gefängnisleiterin spielte, teilzunehmen.

Withers wurde 1980 als erster Nicht-Australier mit dem Order of Australia, Officer Class (AO), geehrt.<ref>https://www.abc.net.au/news/2011-07-16/googie-withers-dies-aged-94/2797302</ref> Sie erhielt im Jahr 2001 den Titel Commander des Order of the British Empire (CBE).

Für ihre Rolle als die Schriftstellerin und Mitbegründerin der australischen kommunistischen Partei Katharine Susannah Prichard in dem Film Shine – Der Weg ins Licht über das Leben des Pianisten David Helfgott wurde sie 1997 für den Screen Actors Guild Award nominiert.

Googie Withers starb am 15. Juli 2011 im Alter von 94 Jahren in Sydney, Australien.
