Gladstone (2019)

Gladstone ist eine Hafenstadt im australischen Bundesstaat Queensland und liegt an der Ostküste etwa 540 km nördlich von Brisbane. Sie ist der Sitz des gleichnamigen lokalen Verwaltungsgebiets (LGA) Gladstone Region Council.

Der Hafen, Port Curtis, wurde bereits Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts entdeckt, die Besiedlung erfolgte jedoch erst viel später. Gladstone wurde 1863 gegründet und nach dem britischen Politiker William Ewart Gladstone benannt<ref>Queensland Places: Gladstone</ref>. Der Aufschwung kam aber erst in den 1960er-Jahren, als sich die Aluminiumindustrie dort ansiedelte. Aus dem Hafen wurde ein großer Industriehafen und inzwischen werden auch Öl und Chemikalien in der Stadt verarbeitet. Etwa 33.000 Einwohner leben heute in Gladstone.<ref name=ABS/>

Zehn Kilometer nordwestlich befindet sich eine große industrielle Anlage, die Yarwun-Aluminiumraffinerie von Rio Tinto Alcan, in der 550 Personen beschäftigt sind.

Verkehr

Flugzeug

Der Flughafen von Gladstone befindet sich in den westlichen Außenbezirken und ist etwa sechs Kilometer von der Ortsmitte entfernt. Er wird vorwiegend von Qantaslink und Virgin Australia bedient. Von Mai 2009 bis 2011 wurde der Flughafen erweitert.

Hafen

Der Hafen von Gladstone ist Queenslands größter Mehrzweckhafen und der fünftgrößte Mehrzweckhafen in Australien. Von ihm wird insbesondere Kohle exportiert.
