Sie ist nach dem deutsch-russischen Geotektoniker Serge von Bubnoff benannt und wird mit „B“ abgekürzt. Eine Bubnoff-Einheit entspricht einem Millimeter pro 1000 Jahre oder einem Meter pro Jahrmillion.
