Billy Paul (* 1. Dezember 1934 als Paul Williams in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; † 24. April 2016<ref>"Me and Mrs. Jones" singer Billy Paul dies at age 81</ref> in Blackwood, New Jersey) war ein US-amerikanischer Sänger und erfolgreicher Vertreter des so genannten Phillysound – einer besonderen Ausprägung des Souls, der sich zu Beginn der 1970er Jahre etablierte.

Sein bekanntester Song war Me and Mrs. Jones, der im Dezember 1972 für drei Wochen die Nr. 1 in den US-Popcharts war.<ref>Nähere Informationen zu diesem Titel in: Bronson, Fred: The Billboard Book of Number One Hits. 3. überarbeitete und erweiterte Aufl. New York City, New York: Billboard Publications, 1992, S. 325</ref> Zugleich war der Song die erste Nummer 1 für die Produzenten Kenny Gamble und Leon Huff und ihr Philadelphia-International-Records-Label. Er gewann mit diesem Song 1973 einen Grammy in der Sparte „Bester männlicher R&B-Künstler“. Ein weiterer bekannter Song von ihm war Only the Strong Survive aus dem Jahr 1977. Als Sänger wirkte er 1998 auf dem Album Sambapopbrasil 2 der brasilianischen Gruppe Art Popular mit. Insgesamt spielte Paul 23 Alben ein. 2002 veröffentlichte er eine Liveversion des Prince-Songs Purple Rain.

Privatleben

Billy Paul war seit 1967 verheiratet und wurde Vater von zwei Kindern. Er starb im April 2016 im Alter von 81 Jahren.
