Biografie

Ascharins Vater war Russe, seine Mutter gehörte einer deutschbaltischen Familie an.<ref name="diel">Alfred Diel: „Andreas Ascharin“; in: Schach-Report, Nr. 12, 1996, S. 85–86.</ref> Nach dem Besuch des Gymnasiums in Dorpat studierte er an der Kaiserlichen Universität Dorpat Jura;<ref>Universität Potsdam: Deutsches Literarisches Leben in St. Petersburg (siehe Weblink)</ref> nach anderen Angaben belegte er von 1865 bis 1874 erst Mathematik und danach Jura.<ref>Diels Angabe (siehe Weblink), Ascharin habe in dieser Zeit an der Universität Sankt Petersburg studiert, trifft nicht zu.</ref> Zwischen 1875 und 1879 lebte er in der russischen Hauptstadt und schrieb als Journalist für die Sankt Petersburger Zeitung und den St. Petersburger Herold. Im Jahr 1879 übersiedelte er dann nach Riga und war Deutschlehrer am Alexander- und Lomonossow-Gymnasium. Auch in der späteren Zeit blieb Ascharin vielseitig publizistisch tätig.

Literaturübersetzer und Dichter

Seine Herkunft erwies sich als richtungsweisend, denn Ascharin trat besonders als Übersetzer russischer Literatur ins Deutsche hervor. Daneben veröffentlichte er eigene Gedichte. In Ascharins Übertragung wurden unter anderem Werke von Alexander Puschkin, Michail Lermontow, Alexei Tolstoi und Nikolai Gogol in Deutschland erstmals bekannt. Seine Übersetzungstheorie erläuterte Ascharin im Vorwort zum Lyrikband Nordische Klänge (1894).

Schachtätigkeit

Während seiner Zeit in Sankt Petersburg nahm er an mehreren Schachturnieren teil. Im Jahr 1876 siegte Ascharin beim ersten russischen Meisterturnier vor Michail Tschigorin und Emanuel Schiffers. Gegen Friedrich Amelung verlor er 1877 einen Wettkampf mit 4:5 (+3 =2 −4). Beim Petersburger Turnier von 1879, das Tschigorin durch Stichkampf gegen Simon Alapin gewann, kam Ascharin auf den sechsten Platz.<ref>Bill Wall: Russian Chess History</ref> In Riga betreute er Schachspalten im Rigaer Tageblatt und in der Düna-Zeitung. Ferner war er Vorsitzender des Rigaer Schachvereins. Zwei Jahre vor seinem Tod veröffentlichte er unter dem Titel Schach-Humoresken eines der frühen Bücher zum Thema Humor und Schach, das zugleich Erinnerungen an Schachgegner wie Tschigorin oder seinen Freund Amelung umfasst.
