Albert Henry Munsell
Albert Henry Munsell (* 6. Januar 1858 in Boston, Massachusetts; † 28. Juni 1918 in Brookline, Massachusetts) war ein US-amerikanischer Landschafts-, Marine- und Porträtmaler sowie Kunstlehrer, der durch sein Farbordnungssystem bekannt wurde. Leben
Munsell war der zwite Sohn des Pianogeschäftsbetreibers Luke Munsell (27. Oktober 1816 – 13. Juli 1875) und dessen Frau Margaret Ann (geborene Johnston; 26. Juli 1831 – 1919). Frederick William Munsell (16. Juni 1853 – 27. Juli 1864) war sein älterer Bruder.<ref>{{#invoke:Vorlage:Literatur|f}}</ref> Er besuchte zunächst von 1866 bis 1874 öffentliche Schulen in Boston und danach die Massachusetts Normal Art School, an der er 1881 seinen Masterabschluss absolvierte. Er unternahm eine Reise nach Europa und studierte von 1885 bis 1888 an der École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Hier wurde er mit 5 Medaillen ausgezeichnet.
Er beschickte in den Jahren 1886 bis 1888 die Ausstellungen im Pariser Salon, in Boston, Chicago, New York und Pittsburgh und hielt Vorträge über künstlerische Anatomie und Farbkompositionen.<ref name="WhosWho">{{#invoke:Vorlage:Literatur|f}}</ref> Seit 1887 war er als Lehrer an der Massachusetts Normal Art School tätig.<ref>{{#invoke:Vorlage:Literatur|f}}</ref>
Wirken
Munsell ließ sich neue Instrumente zur Farbmessung patentieren. Viele Maler seiner Zeit hatten das Ziel, ein System zu schaffen, das ihnen die Arbeit der Farbzusammenstellung und der eindeutigen Farbkennzeichnung erleichtern sollte. Munsell stellte dazu Farbmuster her, die in einem Farbkatalog zusammengefasst werden sollten. Zunächst ging er vom Idealkörper der Kugel aus, machte mit seiner Erfahrung als Maler jedoch schnell Diskrepanzen aus. Daher stellte er nun seine Empfindung über die Form des Farbkörpers und ordnete die materiellen Proben gleichabständig an, das heißt, der Abstand zwischen benachbarten Farbmustern wurde im gesamten System als gleichmäßig wahrgenommen. Munsell sprach von einem Farbenbaum {{#invoke:Vorlage:lang|full|CODE=en|SCRIPTING=Latn|SERVICE=englisch}}. Das American National Standards Institute (ANSI) empfahl Munsells Standardsystem für Oberflächenfarben und es bildete die Grundlage für weitere Forschungen durch die Optical Society of America (OSA). Auch die Internationale Beleuchtungskommission (Commission Internationale de l’Éclairage, CIE) nutzte seine Arbeiten für das CIE-Normvalenzsystem (Tristimulussystem) von 1931. In den 1940er Jahren wurde der Munsell-Katalog mit farbmetrischen Methoden gemessen und daraufhin, an wenigen Mustern nachgebessert, zur „Munsell Renotation“.
Sein System wurde schon bald an Schulen in Baltimore, Boston, Mexiko-Stadt, New York und an weiteren Orten eingeführt.<ref name="WhosWho" /> Alle Farbmuster sind eindeutig durch eine alphanumerische Bezeichnung beschrieben, wodurch Farbe „transportierbar“ wird. Ein Jahr vor seinem Tod gründete Munsell die „Munsell Color Company“, welche die wirtschaftlichen Rechte verwertet und sein Werk fortsetzt; heute gehört die Firma zu X-Rite.
Familie
Munsell war seit dem 28. November 1894 mit Juliet (geborene [Buckingham Dows] Orr; 1865–1948) verheiratet, einer Tochter des Alexander Ector Orr (2. März 1831 – 3. Juni 1914) und dessen Frau Juliet Buckingham (geborene Dows; 1836 – 16. Juli 1872).
