Aidos

Aidos (Vorlage:GrcS) ist in der griechischen Mythologie die personifizierte Scham.

Nach Pindar ist sie die Tochter des Prometheus.<ref>Pindar, Olympien 7,44 ff.</ref> Der Begriff der Aidos ist komplex und in der klassischen Philologie noch immer umstritten. Sie ist mit der Rachegöttin Nemesis eng verbunden.<ref>Homer, Ilias 13,121–122</ref> Nach Hesiod sind Aidos und Nemesis die letzten der Götter, die das verkommene Menschengeschlechte des Eisernen Zeitalters verlassen werden.<ref>Hesiod, Werke und Tage 200</ref> Bei Platon sendet Zeus Aidos zusammen mit Dike („Gerechtigkeit“) zu den Menschen, um diesen ein gesittetes Zusammenleben zu ermöglichen.<ref>Platon, Protagoras 322c</ref>

Sophokles nennt sie in seinem Drama Ödipus auf Kolonos „die neben Zeus auf dem Thron sitzt“ ({{#invoke:Vorlage:lang|flat}}).<ref>Sophokles, Ödipus auf Kolonos 1267</ref> Euripides nennt sie gar „Herrin, Gebieterin“ ({{#invoke:Vorlage:lang|flat}}), was sie vielleicht an die Göttin Artemis in ihrer Eigenschaft als „schüchtern, schamhaft“ ({{#invoke:Vorlage:lang|flat}}) annähern soll.<ref>Euripides, Iphigenie in Aulis 821 und rfg. 436N</ref>

Sie ist auch als Amme der Athene überliefert.<ref>Scholion zu Aischylos, Prometheus 12</ref> Als solche hatte sie einen Altar nahe dem alten Athene-Tempel auf der Akropolis von Athen,<ref>Pausanias, Beschreibung Griechenlands 1,17,1; Hesych. s. v. {{#invoke:Vorlage:lang|flat}}; Vgl. CIA III 367</ref> in Sparta gab es ein altes, ihr von Ikarios geweihtes Kultbild<ref>Pausanias, Beschreibung Griechenlands 3,20,10</ref> und zwei Heiligtümer in Rom waren ihr geweiht.
