Misima, früher St. Aignan Island, ist eine Insel vulkanischen Ursprungs im Louisiade-Archipel der (Milne Bay Province von Papua-Neuguinea). Die Insel ist 40 km lang und 10 km breit, und hat eine Fläche von 202,5 km². Sie liegt gut 20 km nördlich des äußersten nordwestlichen Barriereriffs von Vanatinai, und 80 km nordwestlich dieser Insel. Misima ist gebirgig und dicht bewaldet. Der Mt. Koia Tau ist mit 1.036 Metern der höchste Gipfel des Louisiade-Archipels.

Bevölkerung

Misima hatte 14.756 Einwohner zur Volkszählung 2000 und ist die am dichtesten bevölkerte Insel im Archipel. Der Hauptort Bwagaoia, gleichzeitig auch Sitz der Gemeindeverwaltung für den westlichen Teil des Louisiade-Archipels (Louisiade Rural Local Level Government), liegt an der Südostküste der Insel.

Die Bevölkerung verteilte sich auf 75 Dörfer und drei separate Einrichtungen, darunter Bwagaoia Station(nahe Hauptort Bwagaoia an der Südostküste) mit 734 Einwohnern als zweitgrößte Siedlung. Größter Ort war Kalotawa an der Nordküste mit 752 Einwohnern. Daneben wurden zwei unbewohnte Dörfer und eine unbewohnte separate Einrichtung (eine Schule) aufgelistet.

Öffentliche Einrichtungen

Misima hat einen Flughafen, eine Schule, einen kleinen Markt, einige kleine Lebensmittelspeicher und ein Krankenhaus. Alle Einrichtungen sind jedoch im Hauptort der Insel.

Wirtschaft

Eine Gold- und Silbergrube wurde auf der Insel 1990 geöffnet, jedoch 2004 wieder geschlossen, unter anderem aus Gründen des Umwelt- und Gesundheitsschutzes.<ref>Placer Dome: Misima Mine Sustainability Report 2000 (PDF; 578 kB)</ref>

Amtssprachen

Die Hauptsprache der Insel ist Misima, Amtssprache ist jedoch Englisch, was die meisten Bewohner auch sprechen können.
