Kiriwina, früher Boyowa, ist die größte Insel der Trobriand-Inseln in Papua-Neuguinea.

Geographie

Die Insel ist etwa 50 km lang und an den meisten Stellen sehr schmal und gewunden. Die Westküste der Insel bildet die östliche Begrenzung einer Lagune. Eine von der US-Armee gebaute Straße führt von der Insel-Nordspitze bei Kaibola über Losuisa und Bwadela bis nach Gilibwa an der Südspitze der Insel. Hier schließt sich die kleinere Insel Vakuta an.

Nach der Volkszählung 2000 hatte Kiriwina 22.163 Einwohner. Es gab folgende 82 Dörfer und separate Einrichtungen (census units), von denen 81 zu 25 statistischen Zählbezirken (wards) gruppiert wurden (Gilibwa wird zu einem weiteren Zählbezirk Vataka auf der gleichnamigen Insel gerechnet). Fünf Dörfer waren allerdings unbewohnt. Losuia ist zugleich Hauptort der Kiriwina Rural LLG (Local Level Government) Area des Distrikts Kiriwina-Goodenough der Milne Bay Province. Zur LLG gehören neben den Trobriand-Inseln auch die sich im Westen anschließenden Lusancay-Inseln.

Geschichte

Weitere Distrikte der Trobriand-Inseln wurden durch die Inseln Kitava und Kaile’una gebildet.

Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs landete als Teil der Operation Chronicle US-amerikanische Infanterie am 28. Juni 1943 auf Kiriwina und der östlicher gelegenen Insel Woodlark. Die gemeinsame Operation mit Australien traf auf keinen Widerstand der japanischen Truppen. In den folgenden Wochen nach der amphibischen Landung bauten US-amerikanische Pioniere zwei Flugfelder, eines im Norden und eines im Süden der Insel, deren Landebahnen eine Länge von rund 1,9 Kilometer aufwiesen. Sie waren durch eine Korallenschicht befestigt und konnten ab August von den alliierten Luftstreitkräften benutzt werden.

Wirtschaft

Auf Kiriwina wurde lange Zeit mit der Bananenblattwährung Doba bezahlt. Mit zunehmendem Kontakt mit der Außenwelt verliert diese zunehmend an Wert und wird durch die Währung des Landes, den Tola (Dollar) verdrängt.<ref>Die Währung Doba Verschwindet in: FAZ vom 10. Februar 2012, S. 10.</ref>
