Geschichte
Ein Teil des Gebietes des Countys gehörte zu dem umstrittenen Gebiet, das zum so genannten Aroostook-Krieg führte, einem unerklärten und unblutigen Grenzkonflikt zwischen den Vereinigten Staaten und Kanada (damals unter britischer Verwaltung) im Winter und Frühjahr 1838/39. Nach dem vorläufigen Ende der Streitigkeiten wurde das County am 16. März 1839 gegründet. Sein Name leitet sich von einem indianischen Wort ab, das „wunderschöner Fluss“ bedeutet.
Eine Stätte des Countys hat aufgrund ihrer geschichtlichen Bedeutung den Status einer National Historic Landmark, das Fort Kent.<ref>Listing of National Historic Landmarks by State: Maine (PDF) National Park Service; abgerufen am 11. Geographie
Nach Angaben der Volkszählungsbehörde der Vereinigten Staaten hat das County eine Fläche von 17.686 Quadratkilometern und ist damit das größte County östlich des Mississippi. Davon sind 407 Quadratkilometer (2,3 Prozent der Gesamtfläche) Wasserflächen. Nach Angaben der Verwaltungsbehörden sind nur 10 Prozent des Gebietes bewirtschaftet; 89 Prozent bestehen aus Waldflächen. Das Aroostook County ist ungefähr so groß wie die Bundesstaaten Connecticut und Rhode Island zusammen. Es nimmt mit 21,6 Prozent mehr als ein Fünftel der Gesamtfläche Maines ein.
Das County ist das nördlichste Maines. Es grenzt im Norden, Osten und Westen an Kanada. In ihm entspringt der Penobscot River, der längste Fluss Maines. Das County grenzt im Uhrzeigersinn an die Countys: Témiscouata (Kanada), Madawaska County (Kanada), Victoria County (New Brunswick) (Kanada), Carleton County (Kanada), York County (New Brunswick) (Kanada), Washington County, Penobscot County, Piscataquis County, Somerset County, Montmagny (Kanada), L’Islet (Kanada) und Kamarouska (Kanada).
Städte und Gemeinden
Aroostook County ist unterteilt in 67 Verwaltungseinheiten: 2 Citys, 54 Towns und 11 Plantations. Zusätzlich sind 5 Gebiete unverwaltet (Unorganized Territorys). Ein Indianer-Reservat, das ebenfalls besteht, ist unbewohnt und besteht aus 0,4 km² Wasserfläche mit wenigen, sehr kleinen Inseln.
