Bei der Volkszählung im Jahr 2020 hatte das County 295.911 Einwohner und eine Bevölkerungsdichte von 143,6 Einwohnern pro Quadratkilometer.<ref>U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts: Dutchess County, New York. Geographie

Das County hat eine Fläche von 2.137,6 Quadratkilometern, wovon 77,0 Quadratkilometer Wasserflächen sind. Der größte See des Countys ist der 102 Hektar große Whaley Lake, ein natürlicher See, der inzwischen zu einem Wasserspeicher erweitert wurde. Der zweitgrößte See im County ist der 47 Hektar große Sylvan Lake, ein ehemaliger Steinbruch. Der 30 Hektar große Thompson Pond ist glazialen Ursprungs und wurde mit dem umgebenden Stissing Mountain 1973 zu einer National Natural Landmark erklärt. Der höchstgelegene See des Countys ist das 389 m hoch gelegene Beacon Reservoir, das südöstlich vom North Beacon Mountain liegt.

Benannt wurde es nach Maria Beatrix von Modena, Duchess of York, zweiter Ehefrau des späteren Königs Jakob II., der 1683 noch Duke of York war.

Im County liegen vier National Historic Sites. Acht Orte haben den Status einer National Historic Landmark.<ref>New York.
