Adrien Auzout (* 28. Januar 1622 in Rouen, Frankreich; † 23. Mai 1691 in Rom) war ein französischer Physiker und Astronom.

Leben und Wirken

Vorlage:Hinweisbaustein Auzout verbesserte astronomische Instrumente und erfand, zusammen mit Jean Picard, das Fadenkreuz und 1666 das Mikrometer am Messkreis des Fernrohrs. Damit wurde das Fernrohr vom reinen Beobachtungs- auch zum Messgerät.

Auzout war Mitinitiator des Aufbaus des Pariser Observatoriums.

Ehrungen

Auzout gehörte 1666 zu den Gründungsmitgliedern der Académie des sciences in Paris.<ref>David J. Sturdy: Science and Social Status. The Members of the Académie des Sciences, 1666–1750. Boydell, Woodbridge 1995, ISBN 0-85115-395-X, S. 78.</ref> 1668 verließ er die Gesellschaft wieder. Am 23. Mai 1666 wurde er auf Vorschlag von Henry Oldenburg zum Mitglied („Fellow“) der Royal Society gewählt.<ref>Eintrag zu Auzout; Adrian (1622–1691); physician and astronomer im Archiv der Royal Society, London</ref>

Der Mondkrater Auzout wurde von der Internationalen Astronomischen Union (IAU) 1961 nach ihm benannt.
