== Leben und Wirken ==<br />
Nicol war ein Sohn von Walter Nickol (oder Nicoll) und dessen Frau Marion Fowler. Über seine Kindheit und Ausbildung ist nichts bekannt. 1786 wurde Nicol Assistent des blinden Vortragenden [[Henry Moyes]] (1749–1807). Nach Moyes’ Tod, inmitten einer Vorlesungsreihe in [[Doncaster]], kaufte Nicol 1807 dessen Geräte und Manuskripte und setzte dessen Vortragsreihe über Philosophie der Naturgeschichte fort.
