[[Ralph Bathurst]], Präsident des Trinity College, empfahl Derham dem [[Bischof von Salisbury]] [[Seth Ward]]. Dieser wiederum empfahl ihn der Witwe Lady Catherine Grey of Werke (1634-um 1682) als [[Kaplan]]. Am 29. Mai 1681 wurde Derham von [[Henry Compton (Bischof)|Henry Compton]], dem [[Bischof von London]] zum [[Diakon]] [[Ordination|ordiniert]]. Seth Ward weihte ihn am 9. Juli 1682 zum [[Priester]]. Im gleichen Monat wurde Derham von Richard Neville (1655–1717), dem Schwiegersohn von Lady Grey, das [[Benefiziat]] von [[Wargrave]], Berkshire, präsentiert.
