'''William Crooke''' (* [[6. August]] [[1848]]; † [[25. Oktober]] [[1923]]) war ein britischer Ethnologe, Historiker, Folklorist, Indologe und Kolonialbeamter in [[Indien]].

Er war in Indien überwiegend in den nördlichen Provinzen, den nordwestlichen Provinzen und in [[Oudh]] tätig und verfasste Werke über die Stämme und Kasten, [[Indische Volksreligion|Volksreligion]] und [[Folklore]], und über das [[Kastenwesen]] der Regionen, die zu Klassikern der Indologie zählen und bis heute ständig neu auflegt werden.

Er verfasste auch zahlreiche Beiträge zur ''[[Encyclopaedia of Religion and Ethics]]'' (1908–1921) von Rev. [[James Hastings]].

Er ist auch als Herausgeber von Reisewerken ([[Jean-Baptiste Tavernier]], [[John Fryer (Indienreisender)|John Fryer]], [[Meer Hasan Ali]], [[Šarīf Ǧaʿfar|Shurreef Jaffur]]) und Nachschlagewerken (''[[Hobson-Jobson]]'', 2. Aufl. und ''[[Things Indian]]'') hervorgetreten.
