Das Voluntary entstammt dem englischen [[Barockmusik|Barock]] und ist in der ursprünglichen Funktion mit dem [[Präludium]] vergleichbar. Daher ist das Voluntary auch nicht an eine spezielle kompositorische Form gebunden.
