Als &amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;Van-der-Waals-Radius&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039; &amp;#039;&amp;#039;r&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;lt;sub&amp;gt;vdW&amp;lt;/sub&amp;gt; (nach [[Johannes Diderik van der Waals]]) eines [[Atom]]s bezeichnet man den Radius einer gedachten &amp;#039;&amp;#039;harten [[Kugel]]&amp;#039;&amp;#039;, welche als Modell für den Abstand zwischen Atomen ohne stärkere Wechselwirkungen als der Van-der-Waals-Wechselwirkungen dient (nicht-bindender Abstand). Der Abstand der beiden Atome wird dann durch die Summe der beiden zugehörigen Van-der-Waals-Radien berechnet. Bei stärkeren Wechselwirkungen zwischen den Atomen (z. B. [[Kovalente Bindung|kovalente]] Bindung, [[Metallische Bindung|metallische]] Bindung etc.) findet man Abstände zwischen diesen, die kürzer als die Summe der Van-der-Waals-Radien sind (und z.&amp;amp;nbsp;B. durch Summation der zugehörigen [[Kovalenter Radius|Kovalenzradien]] vorhergesagt werden können). Van-der-Waals-Radien werden teilweise experimentell durch die Abstände in (nicht chemisch verbundenen) Atompaaren in [[Kristall]]en ermittelt, teilweise aber auch aus theoretischen Arbeiten.
