'''The World Turned Upside Down''' ist eine [[England|englische]] [[Ballade (Gedicht)|Ballade]]. Es sind unterschiedliche Versionen überliefert.

== Geschichte ==

Das erste Mal wurde die Ballade als Protest gegen die Politik [[Oliver Cromwell|Oliver Cromwells]] zu Weihnachten verwendet. Cromwell hatte traditionelle englische Weihnachtslieder verboten.

Im Amerikanischen Unabhängigkeitskrieg musste sich 1781 ein britisches Heer unter [[Charles Cornwallis, 1. Marquess Cornwallis|Lord Cornwallis]] in der [[Schlacht von Yorktown]] den amerikanischen Truppen ergeben. Der Legende nach sollen dessen Trommler und Pfeifer beim Ausmarsch aus den Verschanzungen von [[Yorktown (Virginia)|Yorktown]] das Lied gespielt haben.
