Über ihn ist wenig bekannt. Norman fuhr längere Zeit als [[Navigator]] zur See. Er ließ sich schließlich in [[Ratcliff (London)|Radcliffe]] bei [[London]] nieder und stellte Instrumente her, darunter [[Kompass]]e.<br />

Wie schon [[Georg Hartmann (Mathematiker)|Georg Hartmann]] (1544) befasste er sich damit, dass die Kompassnadel nicht horizontal lag. <br />

1581 erschien Normans Schrift ''The newe attractive'', die er [[William Borough]] widmete. Darin beschrieb er das erste [[Inklinatorium]]. ''The newe attractive'' wurde gemeinsam mit Boroughs Schrift ''A discours of the variation of the cumpas, or magneticall needle'' veröffentlicht. <br />
