Steadman absolvierte das ''East Ham Technical College'' und das ''[[London College of Communication|London College of Printing and Graphic Arts]]'' während der 1960er Jahre. In dieser Zeit arbeitete er freiberuflich für [[Punch (Zeitschrift)|Punch]], [[Private Eye]], [[The Daily Telegraph]], [[The New York Times]] und das Rockmusik-Fachblatt [[Rolling Stone]].<br />

Steadman ist bekannt für seine ironischen, politisch und sozial akzentuierten Karikaturen und Cartoons sowie für seine Illustrationen in einer Reihe von Bildbänden, etwa ''[[Alice im Wunderland]]'', ''[[Die Schatzinsel]]'' und ''[[Animal Farm]]''. Außer dem Verfassen und Illustrieren seiner eigenen Bücher hat Steadman mit etlichen Schriftstellern zusammengearbeitet, darunter [[Hunter S. Thompson]], [[Ted Hughes]] und [[Brian Patten]]. Er wurde 1979 zum ''Illustrator of the Year'' gewählt vom [[American Institute of Graphic Arts]]. 1989 schrieb er das [[Libretto]] für ein Öko-Oratorium namens ''Plague and the Moonflower'', welches in fünf Kathedralen in Großbritannien aufgeführt wurde und ein paar Jahre später von [[BBC]]2 verfilmt wurde (1994).<br />
