Alderslade arbeitete als Forschungsassistent in der Zoologie-Abteilung der [[University of Queensland]], danach nahm er von 1974 bis 1981 eine Stellung als Meeresbiologe am Roche Research Institute of Marine Pharmacology, in [[Sydney]] an. Seit 1981 ist er der [[Kurator]] für [[Nesseltiere]] am [[Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory]] in [[Darwin (Northern Territory)|Darwin]].

Er beschäftigt sich vor allem mit der Systematik der [[Octocorallia]] und hat zusammen mit Katharina Fabricius das Standardwerk ''Soft Corals and Sea Fans, a comprehensive guide to the tropical shallow-water genera of the Central-West Pacific, the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea'' publiziert.
