Hierzu werden in einem [[Local Area Network|lokalen Netzwerk]] Frames durch einen &amp;#039;&amp;#039;L2TP Access Concentrator (LAC)&amp;#039;&amp;#039; –&amp;amp;nbsp;in der Regel ein Router mit entsprechender L2TP-Protokollfunktionalität&amp;amp;nbsp;– in eine L2TP-Datennachricht [[Datenkapselung (Netzwerktechnik)|verpackt]] und über ein IP-Netz an einen &amp;#039;&amp;#039;L2TP Network Server (LNS)&amp;#039;&amp;#039; des Zielnetzes gesendet. Dieser entpackt die Nachricht und sendet den Inhalt als OSI-Layer-2-Rahmen in das dortige Netz.&lt;br /&gt;

L2TP ist eine Tunnel-Lösung, die die Vorteile von [[Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol|PPTP (Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol)]] und [[Layer 2 Forwarding|L2F (Layer&amp;amp;nbsp;2 Forwarding)]] vereint. Mit Hilfe einer Tunnel-ID im L2TP-Header sind mehrere Tunnel nebeneinander ebenso möglich wie die Nutzung von [[Network Address Translation|NAT (Network Address Translation)]].&lt;br /&gt;
