== Leben ==
Altsheler wurde in [[Three Springs (Kentucky)|Three Springs]], [[Kentucky]] geboren. 1885 begann er, bei der Zeitung ''[[The Courier-Journal]]'' mitzuwirken. Als [[hawaii]]anischer Korrespondent arbeitete er ab 1889 bei der New Yorker Zeitung ''[[New York World]]'' mit. Später schrieb er Kindergeschichten für die Zeitung.

Altsheler heiratete im Jahre 1888 Sarah Boles; sie bekamen gemeinsam einen Sohn. Während des [[Erster Weltkrieg|Ersten Weltkrieges]] befanden er und seine Familie sich in [[Deutschland]]. Auf der Heimfahrt nach Amerika erkrankte Altsheler schwer und verstarb 1919 in [[New York City]].
