Playfair war der älteste Sohn von James Playfair (1712–1772) und dessen Frau Margaret Young (1719/20–1805). Bis 1762 wurde er zu Hause unterrichtet. Anschließend besuchte Playfair die [[University of St Andrews]], wo er 1765 als Master of Arts (M.A.) graduierte.<br />

1795 veröffentlichte er unter dem Titel ''Elements of geometry'' eine kommentierte Ausgabe der Werke von [[Euklid]]s [[Elemente (Euklid)|Elementen]], in der er eine alternative Formulierung des [[Parallelenaxiom]]s gab. Er war auch einer der ersten Mathematiker, der [[Analysis]] in Großbritannien unterrichtete.<br />
