== Leben und Werk ==
Cyril Mango wurde 1928 in Istanbul als einer von drei Söhnen einer griechisch-englisch-russischen Familie geboren; seine Eltern waren Alexander A. und Adelaide (Damonov) Mango, ein Bruder war der Historiker, Journalist und Türkeispezialist [[Andrew Mango]] (1926–2014). Nach seiner schulischen Grundausbildung in Istanbul studierte er [[Klassische Philologie]] an der [[University of St Andrews]] (MA 1949). 1953 wurde er an der [[Universität von Paris|Sorbonne]] promoviert.

Er begann seine wissenschaftliche Laufbahn 1955 an der [[Dumbarton Oaks|Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection]] in [[Washington, D.C.]], einem Forschungsinstitut der [[Harvard University]], zunächst als Instructor, ab 1955 als Lecturer, ab 1958 als Associate Professor und ab 1961 als ''Professor of Byzantine Archaeology''. 1963 bis 1968 wechselte er als [[Koraes Professor of Modern Greek and Byzantine History, Language and Literature]] an das [[King’s College London]], kehrte jedoch 1968 als ''Professor of Byzantine Archaeology'' wieder nach Dumbarton Oaks zurück. Von 1973 bis zu seiner Emeritierung 1995 lehrte er als [[Bywater and Sotheby Professor of Byzantine and Modern Greek Language and Literature]] an der [[University of Oxford]].

Mango war als einer von wenigen Wissenschaftlern auf allen Gebieten der Byzantinistik tätig: der Philologie, der Geschichte, der [[Epigraphik]] und der Archäologie. Er kann als einer der bedeutendsten Byzantinisten des 20. Jahrhunderts gelten. 1976 wurde er Mitglied der [[British Academy]], 1992 in die [[American Academy of Arts and Sciences]] gewählt und 2002 wurde er [[korrespondierendes Mitglied]] der [[Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres]].

Cyril Mango war in dritter Ehe mit der Archäologin und Historikerin [[Marlia Mundell Mango]] verheiratet. Er starb im Februar 2021 im Alter von 92 Jahren.
