Seine erste mathematische Veröffentlichung erfolgte noch als Student 1969<ref>Invariants of classical lens manifolds in cobordism theory, Mathematics USSR - Izvestiya, Band 33, 1969, S. 695–705, russisch Izv. Akad. Nauka SSSR, Band 3, 1969, S. 735–747</ref>. Ende der 1970er Jahre entwickelte er eine bivariante K-Theorie von Operatoralgebren, die sogenannte KK-Theorie (und der KK-Funktor). Er befasste sich unter anderem mit der Novikov-Vermutung seines Lehrers, der (wesentlich mit Hilfe seiner KK-Theorie formulierten) Baum-Connes-Vermutung (mit Beweisen von Spezialfällen unter anderem mit Nigel Higson) und Nichtkommutativer Geometrie im Sinne von Alain Connes.

1983 war er Invited Speaker auf dem Internationalen Mathematikerkongress (ICM) in Warschau (Operator K-theory and its applications: elliptic operators, group representations, higher signatures, C*-extensions).
